Adding Objects for context. Just need assistance with filling out the Table.

Objectives:

1. Perform paper chromatography, using coffee filters

2. Given a chromatographic system, identify the adsorbent or stationary phase

3. Given a chromatographic system, identify the solvent or mobile phase

4. Differentiate between adsorbed and absorbed

5. Recognize what TLC and GC stand for

6. Explain spotting

7. Identify how varying degrees of attraction causes separation of components

8. Given a sample chromatogram, calculate the Rf of the components

9. Given a sample chromatogram with spot colors identified, identify the components of the sample

10. Complete and submit the laboratory report. Apparatus and Chemicals: Chromatography developing chamber (wide/tall cup or glass such as a stadium cup from Smith Stadium or Diddle arena) Coffee Filters (standard 812 cup size) Toothpicks Ruler Water Table salt Pencil Medium size binder clip or tape Samples: (choose from one of these sets) Skittles or other colored candies (these are fun to work with, but require patience in extracting the dye from the candies) watersoluble/nonpermanent markers such as overhead transparency markers (these will probably work best if you have them) standard food colorings available at the grocery

Question: In the table below, record the color that you observe for each spot or component of each spot after the run is completed. For the retention factor, Rf, write in the numerator (top) the number of mm that the spot has moved and in the denominator (bottom) the number of mm that the solvent has moved from the point where the samples were spotted. Calculate the Rf vale for each spot or component of each spot.
