• Training: Many industry experts debate if the pilot shortage exists. Historically, the career path to an airline or Air Transport Pilot status (the people who pilot scheduled airline activities) has either been through aviation university programs, general aviation career progression, or military flight experience. Those business models are changing drastically. For example, the United States military is successfully enticing their respective pilot cadres to remain by offering substantial retainment bonuses and/or salary hikes. One major U.S. airline, United Airlines, opened a Flight Academy in Arizona to specifically train the future pilots of United Airlines to meet this demand. Consider the pros and cons of a flight academy model for training future pilots.
