Assignment:
Together with your group members (i.e.,4 members maximum) on a Joint Health and Safety
Committee, you're striving to have your workplace get one of the upcoming Canada's Safest
Employers Awards that is organized by the Canadian Occupational Safety magazine, which
celebrate organizations across Canada for their commitment to maintaining a safe work
environment.
Your goal is to select one of the scenarios below and, in response to the situation listed in your
scenario, develop, and implement an innovative and award-winning OHSA strategy for your
business. Your strategy/plan should show that you are aware of, have examined, and have
considered the risks and hazards that are unique to your workplace and industry.
As part of your strategy, elaborate how your plan will be carried out. This includes any policies,
health, safety, and wellness practices, training, motivational techniques, and integrated health
systems management programs etc.
SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING SCENARIOS:
Scenario 1: Located in southwestern Ontario, your office is part of a large international
IT firm with a combined Human Resources and Occupational Health and Disability
Management team of 6-8 full-time experts. Although most of your coworkers are young
(average age of 27), the demographics of your office are quite diverse (gender, ethnicity,
sexual identity and orientation, religion). Personnel are highly skilled and committed. You
have workers, clients, and vendors in Canada and other countries, yet you don't allow
unionization. Long hours and high stress levels at work are common experiences for
many people. After merging with a major rival two years ago, however, disability claims
related to mental health difficulties increased by 10%.
Scenario 2: You are a member of the Health, Wellness, and Safety Team of a senior
care facility in a Toronto suburb. Employees from a wide range of ethnic origins fill the
roles of nurses, personal support workers, and housekeepers, either full or part time.
Employees work irregular hours and juggle multiple obligations as they care for
vulnerable patients and their families. Physical safety has always been a primary focus,
and the company has a strong safety culture. Employees have received extensive
training and are proficient in dealing with hazards such as biological and chemical
agents, safe lifting practices, and the use of personal protective equipment. There has
been an increase in animosity and conflict in the workplace during the past two years,
both amongst employees and between patients and their families. The number of
complaints and allegations of harassment has increased by 15%, and morale is at an alltime low. This may have an effect on the safety of the residents.
Scenario 3: You work at a major Canadian mining company. You, together with other
staff members, union health and safety representatives, front-line supervisors, and
upper-level management, participate regularly in the joint health and safety committee.
Your company places a premium on worker protection and invests heavily in
occupational health and safety policies, practices, and equipment. However, over the
past five years, there has been an increase in the number of accidents and nearaccidents, some of which have resulted in fatalities or major injuries. According to the
accident records your committee has been reviewing, most accidents involve
inexperienced or temporary workers who don't always practice safe work habits like
properly handling dangerous items.
Scenario 4: In a major city in Canada, you work for a transit firm that is heavily
regulated and unionized. As a member of a sizeable HR and wellness, and disability
management team, you assist a diverse group of workers. The majority of workers are in
their middle to late 30s and 40s, and a number of them suffer from long-term illnesses
such diabetes and back and prostate ailments. In addition, the frequency of incidences
of customer violence, hostility, and harassment has increased over the past seven
years, making life for frontline employees (operators and customer service staff)
