"Russian Trade Expo in America
Eager to sell their machinery, clothing, and artwork to Americans, thousands of the private and
state-owned companies from Russia and other ex-Soviet republics come each year to the Russian
Trade Expo to exhibit their wares. According to one of the organizers, the Expo should bring an
awareness to the United States of a huge marketRussia and other republics of the former Soviet
Union. An organizer of the Expo admitted that many European companies have made money
buying, selling, and bartering Russias goods, but U.S. companies have been too timid to participate
on as large a scale. While the failed coup attempt by Soviet hardliners in August of 1991 might have
scared U.S. business owners, it caused rejoicing among Soviet entrepreneurs. They felt liberated
from oppressive regulators who frowned on private business.
The first exposition, Trade Expo 91, was organized at the Concourse Pavilion in San Francisco in
the fall of 1991. More than 100 large and small enterprises from the (then) Soviet Union
demonstrated their products, and about 140 executives held special conferences and made
presentations to show their goods to potential partners and to the public. The companies from
Russia and allied Soviet republics exhibited everything from toys to tools, from washing machines
to woolen apparel, from surgical instruments to electric engines, and from ceramic vases to jewelry.
Many products failed to meet the high American standards of quality, performance, serviceability,
and exterior design. However, some of them demonstrated the great professional and intellectual
potentials of Russian production.
In 1992 the Trade Expo was held in two cities. It started in San Francisco and then moved to Los
Angeles. The organizers used special cargo vans from Nordic Freight Company to store all the
exhibits and then deliver them to Los Angeles. They found that renting cargo vans to move the
exhibition was cheaper and quicker than using cargo airplanes or railway delivery.
Trade Expo 92 was a complete financial success for its organizers. The revenues they received
were due to overwhelming interest from American companies and the public. More than 350
companies and about 40,000 individuals attended the exhibition in 1992. Besides, the organizers
received a payment for any contract signed at the Expo.
The expenses of the exhibition were associated mainly with rental of facilities for the Expo, labor
costs of organizing the exhibition, advertising expenses, and transportation costs to move the
exhibition between cities. The delivery of products from the ex-Soviet Republics to San Francisco
and back home from Los Angeles, as well as lodging and transportation costs for the Russian
exhibitors, were the responsibility of the exhibitors.
Based on the success of these two original expos, in 1993 the organizers were considering
expanding the annual Trade Expo to other major American cities with developed manufacturing
infrastructure. They wanted to start the trip from San Francisco again, then move the exhibition to
other cities in various areas of the United States, and finally conclude with an Expo in New York
City. Besides San Francisco and New York, cities under consideration included Los Angeles, Salt
Lake City, Seattle, Albuquerque, Denver, Dallas, Minneapolis, Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, and
Atlanta. Prior to making reservations for the Expos facilities and dates of the exhibitions, the
organizers needed to decide on the route(s) they would use to move the Expo from one city to
another. This decision would also affect the transportation costs, which are proportional to the
distances. The distances in miles between cities are presented in Table 3 below.
