After a night of partying and drinking, three students in their first year at Lambton College in Toronto decided to break into and take Professor Roger Batchelor's car from the College parking lot and take it for a joy ride. Roger Batchelor had left the vehicle locked, but Rajvir knew how to hotwire a car. He had left it in the lot overnight. Ragvir and Parmeet sat at the front of the vehicle and wore seat belts but the back seat passenger Laura did not wear a seat belt. While they were driving on a side road to Sheppard Avenue they saw a fellow student (Harpreet) who flagged them down to get a ride. The driver (Rajvir) leaned his head out of the window and said: "you are welcome to join us but I should warn you that we are all very drunk." Concerned that the last bus had left, Harpreet got into the back seat and Rajvir drove on rather erratically. Harpreet soon realized that a police cruiser was following the car and, not wishing to be caught in the car with a drunk driver, panicked, pulled open the door (while the vehicle was moving) and was hit by a passing car. Harpreet suffered a broken pelvis and arm. The passenger without the seatbelt (Parmeet) suffered a head injury when the car swerved off the road and hit a pole after Rajvir turned around to see what happened to Harpreet. The police were anxious to get the two injured students to hospital realizing that they had serious injuries but, not wishing the others to escape, handcuffed them both to nearby railings. The weather was very bad and Laur contracted a cold, which turned to pneumonia and when she went to emergency she became exposed to and catching COVID-19, causing her death.
