After becoming familiar with user interface design strategies, you will evaluate one user interface of your choice. Examples include, but are not limited to, any World Wide Web site interface, game, any kind of word processing, spreadsheet, communications software, online catalog system, etc. Anything software! Keep the choice manageable! Many programs are quite large, so you may have to decide to limit your evaluation to certain aspects of the program, e.g., the help system, some overall functions and features, or special options for expert users. The evaluation should be based on a goal or set of goals or a set of metrics, such as evaluating for ease of use, ease of learning, consistency, etc. The evaluation will involve the preparation of a discussion paper (about 5 pages) for this interface evaluation. Guidelines: 5-8 references. The QUIS Links to an external site. or some other metric can be used as a basis for the student's objective evaluation of the user interface. The discussion paper is a critique of the design and usability of the interface being evaluated. It is a synthesis of the HCI principles, strategies, and guidelines that pertain to the design and usability of user interfaces. Your discussions and recommendations must be supported by your outside references. Even though you are the evaluator, write the paper objectively and in third person and rely on your references to substantiate and synthesize your critique. A note about your recommendations and substantiation of literature - you are analyzing an interface of your choice. Here you have an opportunity to integrate into your paper relevant information that you have gained from the required readings and from your own literature research. The literature integration is a conceptual bridge between what you believe should be improved with the interface and what the experts say. If you decide to include the table from QUIS, then submit 3 pages and 3 references. Submit your paper to the "Software Evaluation" dropbox by the end of week 5.
