POST:

The hypothetical program is aimed to serve the population of adults who have experienced sibling loss through any type of cause of death. This population has a variety of needs including simply needing a space to talk about their own grief without needing to push it down to help someone else, universality, healthy coping skills, a sense of purpose, healthy communication styles especially with strained relationships. Those who experience sibling loss are left with not only losing their sibling, but who they are and how they perceive the world. They are left with a sense of purposelessness, hopelessness, strained relationships, etc.

Ways to acquire the information about these needs are through interviews, focus groups and symptom checklist assessments; with this group it should be a requirement to implement a suicide risk assessment before moving forward with any stakeholder. The information needed is simply the severity of each symptom and if the stakeholder is mentally fit to join the program as this is aimed to be outpatient and not inpatient. The secondary reason to gather the information is to find where the stakeholder is at in their grief process, if they have any coping skills (positive or negative), etc. There is a lack of resources on this population and topic, so it is harder to research literature reviews; with this limited information, it is a barrier that will be overcome.

This population should be treated sensitively when discussing the topics of their siblings and the loss, this is a triggering topic for anyone especially if recent in their grief. This population also will be diverse in culture, race, gender and age; all program upstream stakeholders should utilize their multicultural competence when working with the clients and always promote the clients' wellbeing while doing no harm.
