My most important need is "Level III: Belonging". According to the textbook, when belonging needs are the primary source of motivation, employees value work as an opportunity for establishing warm and satisfying human relationships (Manning, 2021). My job is highly supportive with the Belonging needs of their employees. We have weekly meetings, keep track of birthdays and celebrations of my coworkers and my manager has an open-door policy. We also LOVE potlucks. We try to make sure everyone is included, for example, we have a coworker who is vegan. We make sure to include dishes she can enjoy.
My least important need is "Level IV: Respect". The fourth level of motivation demonstrates a person's desire for approval (Manning, 2021). To me, I'm not aiming for anyone's approval. I think it may be because since I was school age, I was always seeking some sort of achievement. In my adult years, I've never had the need to pursue it. Also, from work experience, there aren't many opportunities to receive incentives, such as tangible rewards. We don't receive bonuses or ask for pay raises, since we are a City Government. I try to just go to work and do my job accordingly. A few times, I do get praises from patrons I help. We have ENCORE cards that patrons could fill out to recognize a staff member who has gone above and beyond. I've received a good amount since working for the library during the years. Honestly, I'm just doing my job but to others, I'm doing a great service. It's just not an important need for me to bring attention to myself.
