Akshay and Anjali were Bollywood's hottest couple. They made a movie together in 2019 - "The Last Toy Train to Shimla" - and they fell head over heels in love on the set. Akshay was already married when they met, but he was so in love with Anjali that he left his wife and two kids for her. They bought a beautiful top floor apartment in one of the luxury highrises in Bandra. They went to parties, fashion shows and international events. Everyone wanted to be friends with them.

Anjali was 17 years younger than Akshay. While this wasn't a problem at first, Akshay became increasingly jealous. His new wife was so pretty and so popular. She was named "Most Beautiful Actress of 2021." Akshay thought that other men were interested in her. He started drinking heavily. He would call Anjali incessantly when she was out and send her threatening messages like, "Where are you?? Out with your new boyfriend again?" and "You are such an embarrassment, running around town the way you do. How could you do this to me??" He started calling her names, and when she would come home, he was verbally abusive to her. He also started sending angry texts to a few of his friends, saying how Anjali was cheating on him and how he was going to teach her a lesson.

Anjali didn't know what to do. She tried to assure Akshay that she loved him, but she couldn't stand the abuse that he was heaping on her. One night, after Anjali returned from a dinner at the Taj Hotel, Akshay was very drunk and angry. He screamed at her. They fought. It got so bad Anjali decided to leave and go to a friend's house.

Two days later, a front-page story appeared in the "Bandra Beat" with a headline: "Monster Akshay Abuses Adorable Anjali!!" The story documented Akshay's abusive behavior and text messages and accused him of undermining his relationship with Anjali by being a drunk and insanely jealous. The newspaper story was picked up by two additional journals and ran in their entirety. A well-known columnist named Rita Revenge wrote a subsequent opinion piece in the Bandra Beat about how it's important to reveal the abuse that Anjali suffered to uncover the prevalent domestic abuse in Bollywood. As a result of this negative press coverage, a Japanese whiskey company dropped him from their ad campaign, and the latest movie he signed onto dropped him from the production.
