Albert Bounanno, an employee of AT&T Broadband, refused to sign the new employee handbook which contained a "Certificate of Understanding" that read", "Each person at AT&T Broadband is charged with the responsibility to fully recognize, respect and value the differences among all of us," including sexual orientation. He stated that the Bible is divinely inspired, and that he cannot agree to approve behavior repudiated by Scripture. Nonetheless, he valued every one of his colleagues and pledged not to discriminate or harass anyone, regardless of differences in behavior or beliefs. The AT&T representative who met with him gave him this choice: Sign the agreement, or be fired. He refused and was fired. He won the case.
