3. Give a specific example of a compound and explain its importance for modern world.

Aldehyde, ketone, Carboxylic Acid, and Esters

The aldehyde can be defined as those organic compounds in which a functional group is attached with the structure RCH=O. the functional group defines aldehyde but it can be categorized as a formyl group as well. Aldehydes have been playing an important part in biological and technology spheres. The uses of aldehydes include dyes, resins, and perfumes. Examples of aldehydes are formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, and propanal (McGraw, 2004).

Ketones form in the body when fats break down into the body for energy and chemicals. Ketones can occur in blood or urine. Ketone occurs when there is not enough food to eat for the human body or when the body is unable to use glucose for energy it causes diabetes and the appearance of ketones (McGraw, 2004). Two major types of ketones are acetoacetate and 3-beta-hydroxybutyrate. On the other hand, acetone has been known as the third, and least abundant, ketone body. Examples of ketones include sugars and steroids.

On the other hand, carboxylic acid can be defined as those organic compounds that are joined by a carboxyl functional group. Carboxylic acid occurs naturally and humans are also making them. The general formula of a carboxylic acid is R-COO. It is used in soaps (McGraw, 2004).

Ester can be defined as those compounds that formed when one hydroxyl group replaces by an alkoxy group. An example of ester formation is the reaction between carboxylic acid and alcohol. Examples of esters are ethyl acetate, propanoate, and methanoate (McGraw, 2004). The hydrogen on the carboxyl group of acetic acid is replaced with an ethyl group.
