Alternate dispute resolution provides a cost−$-$effective alternative for companies to manage disputes instead of risking litigation. ADR is particularly prevalent in unionized settings. Arbitrators generally are not required to be judges ($($although many are former judges)$)$ nor are they required to be attorneys ($($although many are).$).$ That said, they are supposed to be subject matter experts in their fields.
