Although the reasons for terrorism are still being debated with causes centered around social, political, psychodynamic, and economic arguments, studies have added neurobiological evidence through brain imaging as an augmented factor in terrorism (Bogerts et al., 2018). Specifically, alteration in the brain structures responsible for prosocial traits such as empathy and compassion and neurobiological correlations like violence and aggression amplify terrorism factors. Brain abnormalities (in the hippocampus and amygdala regions) may be a root cause of terrorist activities.

While the debate on whether the alteration of genes of those predisposed to criminality continues, studies such as these continue to help us understand the biological and psychological makeup of those committing criminal behaviors. A copy of the Bogerts et al. article is attached.
