A'Mari Date 1-31-24 Read the passage and answer the questions that follow. 1 2 3 4 5 Support Electric Cars A 1169 sob woll It is time for our city to take action. The traffic in our city is out of control, and it is causing problems. All of the cars and trucks pollute the air and cause traffic jams. Tests show that our air quality is poor. We need to do something to solve this problem. Otherwise, the problem will only get worse. 6 819 One reason our city is crowded with cars is that parking is cheap. Cheap parking encourages people to drive cars into the city. There would be fewer cars if people took buses or trains. The city also needs people to drive cars that pollute less. The U.S. government supports electric and hybrid cars. Electric cars do not pollute the air. Hybrids use both gas and electric power to run. They have lower emissions, or car exhaust, so they cause less pollution than cars that operate on gas alone. Hybrids and electric cars are becoming more common. Auto companies now offer many models of these cars. In addition, the batteries of electric cars now last longer. So, electric cars can be driven for many miles on one charge. However, recharging them can be a problem. Gas stations are everywhere, but recharging stations are not. Our city should support electric cars to help protect the environment. We have the ability to make a difference. For example, the city could reserve some of its parking lots for electric cars only. This would reduce the number of gas-powered cars coming into the city. It would also encourage people to buy electric cars, which pollute less. The city could also offer recharging stations in city parking lots. The city could profit from selling electricity for charging car batteries. The results would be fewer gas-powered cars downtown, less pollution in the air, and new income from the recharging stations. Supporting electric cars would be a good decision for our city. We must protect our environment for future generations. GO ON Grade 4 Weekly & Unit Assessments Benchmark Education Company, LLC Grade 4 Unit 5 Week 1 Assessment (continued) power provided 4.
