The olefin is dissolved in ethyl acetate and charged to a stirred autoclave. The solution is heated using a steam jacket to 80 degrees C and pressurized to 10 bar with H2 gas. A small volume of a solution of catalyst dissolved in ethyl acetate is then charged to start the exothermic hydrogenation process. The autoclave pressure is maintained by continuous addition of H2 gas. After 2 hours the autoclave contents are brought to 30 degrees C using a water cooling coil, and the pressure is vented before pumping the solution out of the autoclave for further processing.
