An Ammonia (Refrigerant 717) heat-pump unit consists of two heat exchangers in the form of an evaporator and a condenser, a throttle valve and a compressor as depicted in Fig. Q1. Information recorded at the state points depicted in Fig. Q1 is as follows: State point 1: dryness fraction 1 x =1 and temperature 1 t = 24 0C; State point 2: dryness fraction 2 x = 0 and temperature 2 t = 24 0C; State point 3: wet vapour at temperature 3 t = 2 0C; State point 4: wet vapour at temperature 4 t = 2 0C. (a) Determine the dryness fraction of the vapour at state point 4 along with the enthalpy 4 h , where an isentropic process can be assumed for the compressor. [16 marks] (b) Determine the dryness fraction of the vapour at state point 3 along with the entropy 3 s , where an isenthalpic process can be assumed for the throttle valve. [16 marks] (c) Determine the work supplied to the compressor along with the heat given out by the condenser per unit kg of ammonia circulated in both cases. [8 marks] (d) Determine the coefficient of performance (CoP) of the heat-pump unit along with the maximum possible CoP. [10 marks]
