An aquifer in unconsolidated sediments covers an area of 295 square miles (1 square mile =640 acres) in a valley not unlike the Santa Clara Valley. The specific yield of the aquifer is 0.18. An acre-ft is a volume of water one acre in area and 1 foot deep.
(a) An irrigation district wants to know how much water they can remove from the aquifer (in acre-ft) if they lower the water table by 25ft. Calculate the quantity of water they can remove if they lower the water table by 25ft.
(b) The underlying bedrock has a storativity of 510-3. How far (in feet) would they have to lower the piezometric surface in that bedrock aquifer to remove one tenth of the volume of water they would be getting out of the valley-fill aquifer (which you just calculated)?
(c) They plan to use the water to irrigate a crop covering 80% of the valley. The crop has a growing season evapotranspiration rate of 70 inches of water. Will they have enough water to satisfy the water demand of this crop if they lower the water table by 25ft and use the water they produce for irrigation?
