An architectural firm in Lebanon is working on enhancing its production processes during the post-design stage. This stage includes two processes: 2D production and 3D production. These two processes are shown in the figures below. The above first process deals with producing a 2D design drawing. First, a sketch-drawing is developed by an architect. The sketch-drawings are then transformed into neat line drawings. In this station, there are two draftsmen that work in parallel. Afterwards, the line drawings are forwarded to two parallel stations: in the first, a junior architect inserts furniture on drawings and in the second one another junior architect inserts tiling. Using the AutoCAD software, the parallelism is possible at these two stations. The final step is coloring the drawings. 0.75unit/day The above second process deals with producing 3D image of the design. The first step is to draw a 3D model for the design. The second step includes two parallel stations: applying materials to different components and inserting landscape components. Using the Ray Dream software, these two activities can run in parallel. The next step is adding lighting effects, and the final step is rendering which leads to production of the 3D image. 1. First, consider the 2D process. What is the process total throughput time? 2. Which station is the bottleneck? Conclude on the capacity of the system. Explain 3. Assuming that the architectural firm does not have a budget for major process enhancement, is there some possibility to increase the productivity of the 2D process? Explain briefly. 4. Assuming that one of the project manager would like to have six 2D drawings ready in a month, is it possible to accommodate her request? If yes, what would be the utilization of the process? 5. Next consider the 3D process. Which station is the bottleneck? 6. Finally consider both processes. Both processes feed into a station that deals with layout design of different drawing (2D and 3D) before printing the drawings, as shown below. What is the process time of the combined system as a whole? 7. A proposed major enhancement to streamline the process would enhance the 2D process capacity by 200% and the 3D process capacity by 300%. If the cost of the enhancement is $3,000 per year and if the profit per printed unit is $20, would you implement the proposed enhancement? Justify your
