An energy company is proposing to start "fracking" at a location of x = 2.5 km, y = 7.5 km (see map). The community is worried that fracking will contaminate the confined aquifer that supplies the town with water with a pollutant. The aquifer is 10 m thick, with a hydraulic conductivity (K) of 0.005 ms-1 , and is surrounded above and below by aquitards (impermeable layers). A crude map of the aquifer, existing wells, and fluid potentials (F) at the wells is all you know and is shown in Figure 1. Your job is to calculate the steady-state flow within the aquifer and to determine the trajectory of the pollutant. In particular, you must determine whether the well is at risk from contamination and, if so, the amount of time before the pollutant reaches the town's water supply.
