An esterification reaction occurs between 2-phenylacetic acid and 3-methyl-1-butanol in conc. sulfuric acid.

• Write the balanced equation for the reaction you performed. If you used 2.000 g of 2-phenylacetic acid, calculate the mass of 3-methyl-1-butanol required and the theoretical yield of product.
• Calculate the approximate R_f values for both reactants and for the product. Based on the structures of the reactants, which dot/R_f value is associated with which reactant.
• For the IR, give the approximate position (in cm^-1) and the assignment for 2-4 of the most important bands. For example, if you took the IR of the starting alcohol, you might indicate that a strong, broad peak at 3450 cm^-1 was observed which can be assigned to the OH stretch.
• For the ¹H NMR, assign all peaks. A drawing of the product is available as part of this assignment which labels each of the different types of hydrogen atoms present (a-h). Assign each of the observed peaks in your measured spectrum to one of these letters. For example, "(3H, triplet) at 1.10 ppm is assigned to hydrogens (a)". In this simulation the integrated intensities are given with a small amount of random error included. For each peak, convert these integrated intensities into simple ratios and indicate how close these ratios are to the expected values. For example, if the integrated intensities are 58.3 and 38.1, the ratio is approximately 1.53 to 1.00 which is consistent with a 3:2 ratio.
