An ethical dilemma occurs when we are faced with an ethical problem that has no easy resolution. We may have a number of options open to us, but no option is an ideal solution to our problem. Whichever option we choose, some stakeholder/s will be negatively affected.
Ethical dilemmas are not easily resolved but, sometimes looking at the problem through an ethical lens can help us to make a decision that, while we may not be entirely happy with the resolution (because someone's rights or interests have been harmed), we are able to justify the decision taken.
Take a position on a given ethical dilemma and justify your position. You need to judge the ethical scenario and make a sound ethical decision. You may want to relate this to an Australian organisation/business to argue your stand.
Conducting Personal Business on Company Time Because employees tend to spend so much of their weekday hours on the job, they often are tempted to conduct personal business on company time. This can include setting up doctor's appointments on company phone lines, making vacation reservations using their employer's computers and Internet connections or even making phone calls for a freelance side business while on company time. |
At first glance, this ethical dilemma is fairly clear: It is an abuse of your employer to conduct personal business on company time. But there are shades of grey here. What if your spouse calls to tell you that your children are ill? Is it OK for you to schedule a doctor's appointment? A good rule of thumb is for an employee to check with his manager or human resources supervisors to clarify what counts as an actionable offense in the company. |
Are you able to explain the importance of ethical decision making specifically when the organisations face ethical dilemmas. (relate this to an Australian organisation/business) ?
Are you able to assess and evaluate the provided ethical dilemma?
Can you explain your position regarding the provided ethical dilemma?
Are you able to make a plan for a specific and review system to make ethical decisions when facing similar dilemmas?
