An experiment is designed to test the "bystander effect" - the tendency of a person to respond to an emergency more slowly if other people are present. Thirty students from a social psychology class are equally and randomly assigned to one of two treatment conditions. In condition A, a student is asked to fill out a questionnaire in a small room by him- or herself. After 5 minutes, artificial smoke is piped under the door of the room, and the student is timed to see how long it takes him or her to respond to the "emergency." In condition B, a student is asked to fill out a questionnaire in a room in which three other students (confederates of the experimenter) are seated. Again, artificial smoke is piped under the door and the participant's reaction time is recorded. Did the experimental condition affect the amount of time it took to respond to the "emergency"?

Condition A Condition B
146 133 127 151 226 180
148 240 173 213 148 219
121 165 187 133 208 171
107 184 170 216 173 209
122 132 158 208 131 207

Step 7: Circle your conclusion below: (1 point)

  1. Whether or not there were people in the room did not affect how long it took the participant to respond to the "emergency"
  2. Having people in the room significantly increased how long it took the participant to respond to the "emergency"
  3. Having people in the room significantly decreased how long it took the participant to respond to the "emergency"
