An illustrative example of CBA in the public sector is the evaluation of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 in the United States. The Environmental Protection Agency conducted a comprehensive CBA to assess the amendments' economic impacts. The analysis estimated that the benefits, primarily from reductions in air pollution-related health issues and environmental damage, significantly outweighed the costs of implementing stricter emission controls. From 1990 to 2020, the estimated benefits ranged from $2 trillion to $2.4 trillion, whereas the costs were approximately $65 billion (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2011).
