Present the most current version of your research question and state the phenomenon of interest.

Qualitative Research Question: What is the meaning, structure, and essence of the lived experience of protective factors for the individuals who have considered but never attempted suicide?OrWhat is my experience of this phenomenon and the essential experience of individuals who have considered but never attempted suicide yet experienced protective factors intensely?[Phenomenology and Heuristic Inquiry] (based on Walden University, n.d., Matrix).

The phenomenon of interest is protective factors against self-inflicted harm.

Describe the criteria for inclusion and exclusion.

Patton (2015) asserted that qualitative inquiry typically focuses in depth on relatively small samples, even single cases (n = 1), selected for a quite specific purpose (p. 263). Inclusion criteria encompasses a deep, well-founded concept about individuals who considered but never attempted suicide. This concept could be recognized through agencies which promote mental-wellness, and prevent suicide through intervention hotlines.

Exclusion would be those individuals who may attend online chat rooms as curiosity-seekers, yet have no experience with suicidal ideation or attempts; this would also exclude individuals who considered, then attempted suicide, incompleters.

Describe in detail the choices for sample size, data saturation, and theoretical saturation.

Sample size would be approximately 10 (n=10) participants with open-ended interviews. Data saturation would occur when the interview questions yield the same, or repetitive results per participant. That would be the point where there is no further information which varies, or adds any extra information to the study's integrity.

Put yourself in the participant's position, and consider the assurances you would want to hear to ensure that your privacy is respected and your identity will not be revealed when the study is published.

A participant and a researcher are somewhat linked together through the trust of the shared information while the researcher has an overseer responsibility to the participant ensuring participant identity and answers to the interview questions would remain anonymous. Patton asserted it can also be helpful to leave interviewees with a way to contact you in case they want to add something that they forgot to mention, or clarify some point (p. 470).
