Andrew Hacker, a political science professor at Queens College, has been critical of the algebra requirement in high schools and colleges. He has recently published these views in a book "The Math Myth: and Other STEM Delusions". Read thearticle by Hackeron his views, as well as the two rebuttal articles, and join in on the debate. All of you had to take algebra to get where you are in your mathematical development. What is your opinion. To be fair to Hacker, he is not proposing that mathematics be eliminated, but that the algebra requirements be replaced by a course in quantitative or numerical reasoning. Exactly what this is I don't know, I have to look at his book to find out. My department chairman told me he would be interested in reading your views on this matter.
