Andy has just joined a new team at an organization that helps support young people from underserved communities access post-secondary education, He is passionate about the work and eager to collaborate with his new manager, Alison. He has seen her present at several conferences in the past and has appreciated her perspectives on and passion for this work.

At his first team meeting, the discussion becomes heated when 2 staff members have differing opinions about a potential corporate sponsor for an upcoming event. (Sam, who works in fundraising, was excited to share news of this sponsor with the wider team, but another team member, Robyn, noted that this company had a history of discriminating against LGBTQ+ employees and advised against this sponsorship). Sam became very upset and aggressive and started yelling about how hard he had worked to secure this sponsorship . Sam dominated the conversation and Andy noticed how everyone else in the room slowly started to disengage and shut down

He also noticed that Alison didn't say anything and he was surprised she didn't step in and ask Sam to listen to the teams' perspectives. Andy himself had some ideas to share in that meeting, but he hesitated to voice any of them for fear of being shut down by Sam.
