Angela manages a team of 14 service representatives who handle service requests for a party supply company. She has worked hard to build her group of employees into a cohesive team. Yesterday her boss told her that another manager will be on vacation and, during this time, Angela will take over responsibility for six of that manager's employees. Angela was shaken by the news because this manager has done nothing to develop his employees into a united team; therefore, Angela is concerned that bringing these employees, all of whom have negative attitudes, into her workgroup is going to cause her team to backslide. Today, when she held a team meeting to share the news and ask for their cooperation, she was not too surprised by the responses. "You've got to be kidding. Of all the employees, we had to get the three most corrupt?" "I'll tell you right now, I cannot work with Jason. He has the worst attitude and just the other day he chewed me out." The same thing happened to me. He yelled at me about the way I handled a customer." "And have you heard how he talks to customers? I can't believe his manager lets him get away with that." "Well, what about Tom? He's no better." The team continued to complain as they left the meeting. Angela knows she is in a pickle!

  1. How should Angela handle this situation and why do you feel that way?
  2. Do you think Angela should keep them teams separate or have them work together? What do you think would happen in both scenarios?
  3. What team-building exercises could Angela implement? Have you done this exercise at your place of employment? Where did you hear of this exercise?
