Anita is working in the fish section of the Brossard store of Grocery Plus, a major chain of supermarkets, selling all kind of food items.

Anita is working in the fish section of the Brossard store of Grocery Plus, a major chain of supermarkets, selling all kind of food items. A week ago, she watched a TV show called "What is in your plate ?". The TV show had a report about a few grocery stores who misrepresented on the label the type of fish being sold. Customers would end up buying cheaper fish thinking it is another type of more expensive fish. She started to wonder if Grocery Plus was doing that as well. Two days later she saw Andrew, the manager of the fish department, and asked him if he saw the show and the piece on swapping the fish. Andrew answered: Indeed, I saw it, it looks like everyone is doing this not only us. Andrew told her that mislabeling the fish products was strongly suggested by Raphael, the store manager. Apparently, according to Andrew, it is a common practice in other Grocery Plus stores as well. The mislabeling would help the store reach its profitability target, and ensure Raphael and Andrew meet the threshold for their annual bonuses.

Anita was shocked to learn about this. She felt bad being part of a system that lied and manipulated the ignorance of the customers. The next day, she created an anonymous email account and sent an email to the TV show telling them that this practice was happening at Grocery Plus, especially in the store in Brossard. 3 weeks later, a researcher for the TV show went to the Brossard store and bought a couple of fish products. Lab results confirmed that the fish in the Brossard store was mislabelled. 6 weeks ago, the TV show broadcasted a follow up that featured the Brossard store. 2 days after that broadcast, Anita is called in the office by Raphael the store manager. She is informed by Raphael that he learned that she ratted on Andrew to the TV show. She cannot be trusted and consequently is fired. She finds out that Raphael also fired Andrew earlier that same morning. She wrote back from the anonymous e-mail to inform the TV show of those dismissals. The TV show is calling the Grocery Plus head office for comments.

Caroline, the Vice-President for the area of the Montrgie (the area in Quebec that includes the Brossard store) for Grocery Plus, is asked by the head office to respond to the TV and some other media inquiry who picked up the story from the show. Some complaints are also filed to the Consumer Protection office. You are a consultant for the Vice-President. She asks for your advice. She informs you that she spoke to Raphael. Raphael denies any knowledge of the mislabeling and insists that he took definite actions the second he found out about the situation from the TV report. Andrew said he was following directives from Raphael and confirmed that Anita asked him about the original TV show. Andrew told Caroline that he told Anita the mislabeling was happening but no one else knew except Raphael, Anita and himself unless they spoke about it. Anita told Caroline she was told by Andrew about the situation but never spoke to anyone else besides Andrew about it.

1-What is your advice to Caroline regarding the media interview? (Your answer should be around one page and no more than one and half () (4 marks)

2-What course of action do you recommend to Caroline in regards to the situation at the Brossard store and its employees ? (6 marks)

Include in your advice your analysis using the principles of ethics of the conduct of Anita, Andrew, and Raphael.
