Marasinghe 1, Anusha Wijayaratne 2 Abstract Thisstudyexaminedtheinfluenceof genderonjobsatisfactionamonguniversity libraryprofessionalsinSriLanka.Surveydesignwasadoptedforthestudy.The general objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of gender differences on the level of job satisfaction among the professional staff of the university libraries in Sri Lanka. Fiveparameterswereconsidered.Theywere work,co-workers, compensation, promotion and supervision. The population of the study consisted of 125libraryprofessionalsof15universitiesundertheUniversityGrants CommissioninSriLanka.Allmembersofthepopulationweregiventhe opportunity to participate in the study. A semi-structured questionnaire was used as themain datacollection instrument. Theresponse ratewas 64%. Cronbach'salpha valuesofallvariablesareabove0.6 (work: 0.764, co-workers: 0.864, compensation:0.661,promotion: 0.614and supervision:0.963). Theinstrument usedtomeasureeach variableinthecurrentstudyisreliableandalltheitemsare positivelycorrelatedtooneanother. The meanofjobsatisfactionofallaspects: work; co-workers;compensation; promotionandsupervisionishigherinFemales (0.9200,0.8021,0.6521,0.6667,0.7243)thanmales(0.7277,0.6406,0.5250, 0.3854, -0.0052).Theresultsindicatedthatthereisasignificantdifferenceofjob satisfactionbetweenmaleandfemaleuniversitylibraryprofessionalsonlyinthe "supervision" parameter. The overall job satisfaction of both male and female (3.77) university library professionals is equal. However, equal treatment to both genders willhelptoachievehighersatisfactionlevels.Thefindingsofthestudywillbe helpfulforlibrariansandadministratorstodevelopamotivatedandproductive workforce for organizational success.
