This week is all about cultural competency and intercultural communication. In your classroom, work, and life, you will experience and encounter people of all different cultures. It is important that we move beyond the me-centered and other-centered analysis of cultural awareness and move towards cultural competence.

In our lives, we have all experienced conflicts where a lack of cultural competency was the root of the problem or escalated the problem. Think about times when you travelled to other countries, did groupwork with students who were from different cultures, and have friends that come from different cultures.

Think about one specific interpersonal conflict you experienced with another individual and explain what the conflict was in detail.

What stage of the Cultural Competency model (use from textbook mentioned above) (Cultural Awareness, Cultural Knowledge, Cultural Sensitivity and Cultural Competence) best describes your level of cultural competency at the time of the conflict? How could having a higher level of cultural competency help you to resolve the conflict? What could you do now to develop your cultural competency? Be specific.
