A8 Bulls-eye 1-Conservation of Energy Objective: To develop a mathematical relationship to predict the impact location of an object, released from rest, on an inclined track a known height above the floor. Using Conservation of Energy and kinematics, determine the relationship between projectile mass, release height, ramp angle and counter height. Materials List: projectiles, meter stick, tape, target, flexible track, track stand(s), stopwatch, photogate. Procedures: 1. With the end of the track secured to the edge of the lab bench, prop up and secure the opposite end with a stand. Ensure a smooth curve near the bottom of the ramp. 2. Brainstorm with your group to create a protocol (set of ordered steps) to individually hit a target at a known distance (0.25 m, 0.50 m and 0.80 m) along the floor measured from a point directly below the end of the track and edge of the counter (this is the launch point). 3. Develop a diagram of the ramp length, ramp angle, release point (height above lab counter), projectile trajectory and anticipated impact point(s). Detail all of your variables and known values. Analysis: 1. Write out, in detail, the steps in your protocol. Someone unfamiliar with this activity should be able to follow your protocol and replicate your results. 2. Determine a formula to calculate the release point for a selected ramp angle that will result in a direct hit on each of the three targets (within 1 cm). 3. Test your calculated results: do your calculated release height cause the projectile to impact at the predicted location? If not, adjust release height until you hit the target. Discuss the reasons for the difference(s), if any. Conclusions: 1. Does the mass of the projectile have an effect on ramp angle, release height or impact distance? Why or why not? 2. How does impact velocity change with release height? Discuss with words and support your discussion with data and graph(s)
