Problem Set 2: Controlling for Observables In 2014, the government ofNicaragua implemented a pilot program called the Rural Business Development (RBD) Program inthe departments of Leon and IChinandega. The RBD provided training and credit to farmers in order to raise farm productivity and household income. The government is now considering expanding the RED program to cover the entire country. Before doing so, however, the Minister of Agriculture wants to know how effective the pilot program was. You have been hired to evaluate the RED program To carry outyour evaluation, you willuse a data set collected by the Ministry of Agriculture at the end of 2015, the year after the RED program was implemented. This data set, \"ps2_2020_Nicaragua.dta\" on the course website, comes from a survey applied to a random sample of 1,684 farmers in Leon and IChinandega. The dataset includes the following variables: Variable Name Description treat 1 = HH's that were treated; CI = 1111's that were not treated income Annual per capita income from main crop (in 3's, adjusted for PPP) Job'\" 1 = cattle; 2 = grain; 3 = yuca (cassava root) age* Age of head of household education'\" Number of years of education obtained by head of household capital'\" Total value of mobile capital used on the farm land'\" Farm size (in manzanas; 1 manzana = 1.7 acres) *Households were asked about the value of these variables at baseline, just before the program was offered. After discussions with the Ministry of Agriculture, you learned the following. First, all farmers growing grain oryuca (cassava root) or raising cattle in Leon and Chinandega were eligible to participate inthe RBD as long as they were willing and able to make a \"matching\" investment of at least $100 USD. Second, all farmers in the sample were offered the opportunity to participate inthe program. Those withtreat=1 participated, while those with treat=0 did not
