Share an example where the leader changed his or her emphasis on task and relationship to match the maturity and expertise of the followers. You may use an example from your work experiences, school, clubs, a sports team, or even about a public figure in the news. (It is highly recommended that you do not evaluate yourself as leader.) You need to have enough information (either from your personal experiences or research) to share specific details about the situation. If you decide to use a public figure, please provide links to your references, so we can explore them as well. Needless to say, you should review the discussion, because you must provide an original scenario.

  1. Describe the situation the leader was in. Be specific, describing the organization or group, it's goals, the background and/or experience of the leader, and the types of followers in the group. Any other pertinent information regarding the challenges the organization was facing or industry context would also be helpful. (2 points)
  2. Categorize your leader in terms of one of the styles in Hersey and Blanchard's model. (i.e. Telling, Selling, etc.) Be very specific to describe the leader's behaviors and how they matched the needs of the followers. (Not: "He told the new hires what to do.", Good: "He provided detailed checklists and procedures to each of the new hires for completing the inventory.") (3 points)
  3. Now describe your leader in terms of another of the styles in Hersey and Blanchard's model. (i.e. Telling, Selling, etc.) Be very specific to describe the leader's behaviors and how they matched the needs of this other group of followers. (Note that it could be the same followers who evolved over time, too.) (3 points)
