Scenario

Pakenham University's Mission Statement is:

"The mission of Pakenham University is to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning, and research at the highest levels of excellence. We strive to achieve the best possible learning experience for our Learners through the provision of quality trainers, training and student support."

The University prides itself on the quality of its teaching body and it uses Contractor Facilitators to deliver its various Certificate IV and Diploma Workshops. There are over 100 Contractor Teachers. In this scenario, you are the direct manager of these Contractors.

The university runs over 1000 workshops a year and. at the end of each Workshop, surveys are sent via SMS/Email to Participants to identify their satisfaction levels. The surveys help the University better understand the needs of its learners and identify areas where improvement is needed. Results of all the surveys are sent to you.

At the end of a 3-day Certificate IV WHS course run by Fred Jones (Contractor Facilitators) you receive 12 Evaluation Feedback Sheets.

While most of the feedback is neutral, there are comments on one of the surveys which greatly concern you; those comments are reproduced below:

"I was disappointed with the professionalism of the trainer. On day 1 of the course I went to the Men's' toilets and found him smoking in one of the cubicles.

Then, on the last day of the course, after a one-hour lunch break the trainer's breath smelt of alcohol and tobacco!

Also, the Trainer's laptop electrical cord is a hazard! The rubber coating is ripped in parts exposing the wire and there is no test and tag label. For a teacher of health and safety, he is not leading by example!

Background:

Fred has been a contractor with the University for 14 months and has never had negative student feedback; in fact, he is quite popular with the students

The feedback from the student is a true representation of actual events.

Unbeknownst to you Fred recently broke up with his partner and is struggling to copeFred is next due to run a course in 6 days
