ArkansasBest is planning to develop a new production scheduling system to respond to production orders submitted by the sales department. The following describes the process for which the new system is being developed:

The sales department submits a production order. For each product on a production order, the system has a process that checks from the Workstation file the availability of the workstations that are needed to complete the work. The available workstations are reserved. The information is sent back to the Workstation file and the file is updated. The production order is stored in the Production Order file.

Using the production order ID, another process looks for the production order from the Production Order file. If found, the requested production order is loaded. If not, a supervisor is notified. From the Workstation file, the process looks for the earliest available time slot for each task for each workstation, being careful to preserve the required sequence of tasks. The Workstation file is updated with the new information.

The new system has a process that produces a production schedule. The process retrieves the data on the assigned workstations and production order. Using the data, this process produces a production schedule, which is sent to the supervisor and materials department. The process also determines the appropriate quantities of the materials for the production schedule. A material request is produced and sent to the material department.
