Article 1 WallStreet Journal Donald Trump Tests His Trial Gag Order There's a reason to protect the jury, but why shield Michael Cohen, who is ubiquitous on TV? Lawyers and political advisers to Donald Trump have spent years trying and failing to convince Mr. Trump to hold his tongue for his own good. Will New York Judge Juan Merchan have any better luck, as he seeks to preserve some judicial decorum at Mr. Trump's hush-money trial? And if not, is he really going to throw Mr. Trump in jail? Judge Merchan issued a relatively narrow gag order last month, citing an "obligation to prevent outside influences, including extrajudicial speech, from disturbing the integrity of a trial." He told Mr. Trump to refrain from lambasting probable witnesses; court and prosecution staff, as well as their families; and jurors or prospective jurors. Mr. Trump can still excoriate District Attorney Alvin Bragg and the judge, and appropriately so, since they hold public office. The prosecution says Mr. Trump has already violated the order and should be held in contempt. In a Wednesday post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump quoted a TV commentator claiming that "undercover Liberal Activists" are "lying to the Judge in order to get on the Trump Jury." In the courtroom Thursday, his legal team argued that it doesn't break the gag order for Mr. Trump to repost a line from somebody else. Retweets are not endorsements, as they say
