No. 4, pp. 440-449.Guidelines for Summarizing and Critiquing a Research Paper Summarizing Summarizing involves reducing the content of the paper without losing the essential information. This will involve: 1. A brief statement of the practical and disciplinary importance of the research problem being investigated in the paper; 2. A succinct account of how literature in the topic area has been drawn upon in developing the paper; 3. A summary of the theoretical positioning of the paper; and 4. A highlight of both the type/"quality' of data that inform the study, substantive findings, and contributions Critiquing A well-reasoned critique should cover the following, in addition to any other matters that you believe are important: 1. The research problem Does the paper have a well-motivated and clearly articulated research problem? How significant is the research problem? How relevant is (are) the authors' claim for solving it? Would you have done something different (why)? 2. Quality of the arguments: literature review and theory development Is the literature review active and purposive? Does the literature review make the research problem salient and significant? How relevant is the choice of theory? Has there being sufficient theorising of the research problem and the implied relationships? Were there any problems with the theoretical reasoning? Were there any important assumptions left unstated and/or concepts poorly defined? Would you have done something different (why)? 3. The research design Is the research design appropriate and sound for investigating the research problem? Does the research design seem to flow from the research questions, literature review, and theoretical framework? Is the data of good and reliable quality? Are the appropriate approaches used for analysing data? Would you have done something different (why)? 4. Findings and conclusions Do the findings of the study support the claims made? Are the findings reasonable and consistent with other studies? Has the paper demonstrated "original" and "significant" contribution? Is the conclusion clear and obvious, and related to the research problem? Are the thesis (aim) and the main arguments of the paper restated in the conclusion?
