As noted in the Challenger documentary, the Presidential Commission concluded that the decision-making process used in the case of the Challenger disaster was seriously flawed. If so, it is natural to ask ourselves who (and/or what) was responsible for those flaws, and how they might have been eliminated (and tragedy prevented). In this task, you will consider these questions from several perspectives and use a number of different concepts we have covered in class this term.
Part 1 - In your own words, describe/define the difference between a Proper Engineering Decision (PED) and a Proper Management Decision (PMD). (see Chapter 4.4) Based on your definitions, how would you classify the type of decision-making process that should occur when launching any Space Shuttle? Please explain and justify your answer. How does your recommendation compare with the decision-making process that actually took place in the case of the Challenger?
Part 2 - Describe/define how the concept of responsibility (review Chapters 3.1 & 3.2) as studied in class applies to the case of the Challenger. Specifically, how did role, obligation, and blame responsibility come into play
Part 3 - Describe/define how the eight (8) impediments to responsible action were involved. Give examples for example, use NASA senior manager Jesse Moore, NASA mid-level manager Larry Mulloy, Morton Thiokol, Roger Boisjoly, and Arni Thompson.
Part 4 - What have you learned the most from this case study? How will you use your knowledge and new insight in practical ways when you leave this class?
The book that is used for the class is:
Concepts and Cases ENGINEERING ETHICS (Sixth Edition)
ISBN: 978-1-337-55450-3
Please answer all parts with at least 1 page each part please. Will leave like and comment as well for this.
