As of November 2019, Tom served as the design and execution engineer at PAIBEAM Company, responsible for designing a 6-story residential building. The architectural design included five residential floors and one pilot floor for parking. Based on geotechnical laboratory reports indicating a Type 2 soil, I opted for a medium reinforced concrete frame structure (in both X and Y directions) considering the owner's and contractor's requirements for economic optimization.
Given constraints in ceiling spans, column spacing, and cost-effectiveness, I proposed and finalized a ribbed slab system. For structural design, I utilized ETABS and SAFE software, while AutoCAD was employed for detailed structural drawings. Considering the seismicity of Tehran city, I designed the lateral earthquake loads per the ASCE-7 American standard and ASCE-7 2800 for building seismic design. For dead and live loads, I followed the sixth chapter of the national building regulations and the ninth chapter for the design and control of reinforced concrete structures, adhering to ACI-318 American concrete standards.
Actions taken in this project as a structural designer include:
1. Reviewing the project's planning form from Tehran Municipality, examining its regulations and constraints.
2. Dimensioning and finalizing columns, coordinating with the architectural department, and aligning with owner and contractor requirements.
3. Thoroughly studying the geotechnical laboratory report, examining borehole logs for groundwater and soil properties.
4. Controlling the joint openings on the architectural plan and ensuring compliance with seismic regulations, considering the building's height.
5. Calculating the joint opening based on the formula 0.005xH = ∆, as the building was less than 8 stories and did not fall under tall building regulations.
6. Modeling the structure in ETABS based on architectural plans and sections, selecting an appropriate structural system, and opting for a linear static analysis method for the building, choosing a medium reinforced concrete frame structure in both X and Y directions.
