As the new executive director of an organization that runs IDLA homes(Independent Designed Living Arrangements)for adults with developmental disabilities, I have identified several areas that need improvement. The first issue is the lack of accountability among staff to meet the expectations and standards set by our mission and vision. There is a lot of uncertainty, with staff frequently stating "I don't know" and "No one has ever shown me or taught me how to do this particular task". This highlights the need for better management and leadership, which is a crucial aspect of this industry. The DMAIC method stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. The first step is to define the problem by understanding the root/main issue, such as low productivity, and acknowledging that there is a problem. The second step is to measure the size and importance of the problem using tools like Pareto analysis, where the frequency of the situation can be analyzed among staff who haven't been properly trained. The third step is to analyze the main causes of these problems. This helps to identify why the problem is occurring, whether due to insufficient job description, failure to identify potential, or lack of oversight during the transition period. This stage involves eliminating the causes by improving the process. One way to achieve this is by appointing a strong leader who can build a solid structure and foundation. The final step is to control the new procedures. This involves ensuring that they remain within permissible limits to run as planned. Using the DMAIC method, we can improve our operations and better serve our mission of providing safe and independent living arrangements for adults with developmental disabilities.
