As the world decarbonizes its energy production, natural gas-fired steam power plants will offer important transitional power. Nuclear power reactors will presumably take over that role to supplement the intermittent power from energy sources such as wind and solar. Importantly, though, the Rankine cycle will still be used in nuclear power plants. Consider a standard steam power plant operating on the ideal Rankine cycle. The boiler is heated by the burning of natural gas. The upper pressure is 8 MPa and the condenser temperature is 40C. The turbine inlet temperature at state point 3 is 574C. The feedwater pump and turbine are irreversible with isentropic efficiencies np = 0.85 and r = 0.88, respectively. The steam quality at the exit of the turbine, x4, is 90%. The steam flowrate is 70,000 kg/h. Answer Questions 1 to 6 using EES, and provide the relevant EES code for each of these questions. A 1. Show the entire cycle on a detailed p-h diagram. (5 points) Calculate the power (in kW.) required to drive the feedwater pump. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Interpret the answer in term of the total power produced by the turbine(s). (10 points) Determine the rate of heat transferred (in MWth) in the boiler. Interpret the answer in terms of the total power produced by the turbine(s). (5 points) Determine the power output of the turbine (or turbines), in MW.. Interpret the answer in terms of the total heat input at the boiler. (5 points) Determine the rate of heat rejected (in MWth) to the cooling water in the condenser. Is this a lot of energy that is being discarded? Explain. (5 points) Determine the thermal efficiency of the power plant. Is this "good" or "bad"? Explain in terms of the Carnot efficiency of a Rankine cycle operating between the same temperature bounds. (5 points) Determine how many kilograms of CO2 are produced for each kWh of natural gas burned in the boiler. You must do independent research to find this answer, remembering to clearly cite your references (author(s); name of publication; date/volume number / page numbers; hyperlink). Also, calculate how many tons of CO2 this powerplant emits every year, if the plant runs for 10 months a year. (5 points) Produce a high-impact, one-page infographic showing how the natural-gas fired Abbott steam powerplant works. The infographic must be suitable for use on a cell phone, tablet, or computer. The infographic should provide all the main features of the powerplant, including pictures of the
