As you consider your use of expert power consider the role that dependence plays in power. McShane & Von Gilnow (2019) discuss that employees and managers rely on one another to do the work of an organization. They suggest that while managers can have more power over employees there are times when employees have more control (power) due to the resources they bring to the organization. Think about this in terms of expert power. We hire people because of their knowledge, skills, and abilities. So these are the resources they bring to managers. If we hire someone for their expertise, how do you think you need to manage/lead this relationship?
