ASCA maintains the position that school counselors must work to identify social and emotional signs of suicide and/or homicide and ensure prevention and intervention methods are in place. School counselors hold the moral and ethical responsibility to report suicidal and homicidal ideation to legal guardians and the appropriate authorities when necessary. School counselors exercise responsible care to protect students from harm to self or others. A critical component of addressing suicidal and homicidal risk is the knowledge and skills related to your school, district, and/or state protocols for suicidal/homicidal ideation. Please locate and review your all suicidal/homicidal protocols relevant to your field experience site.
After reviewing the protocol(s), 8-10-slide digital presentation (not including title slide and reference slide) that addresses the following:
- Explain the protocols and procedures at your internship site for suicidal and homicidal students.
- Describe the assessment tool used for identifying the level of suicidal/homicidal ideation.
- Describe the levels of risk for suicidal and homicidal students per the school's protocol.
- Detail the protocols and procedures in your school for each level of risk.
- Identify resources within your school and community for the prevention and intervention of suicidal and/homicidal ideation.
