 How to improve departmental absenteeism? (Previous MBA student) Organizational Background: Founded in 18XX, Hospital A was built to serve the health care needs of people living in Central Minnesota. Today, Hospital A has grown to eight hospitals and is now one of the largest health systems in Minnesota. The Sterile Processing Department (SPD) at Hospital A is a 24/7 department that supports almost 15,000 surgeries annually. The field of sterile processing is a fast-paced, high-demand, and highly technical support job. Most positions require a high school level of education. 

The SPD department is responsible for ensuring surgical patient safety, following a heavily regulated workflow, and working to support high-demand customers. Identify Problems: With a high-demand work environment and the associated stress, it is often difficult to reduce the departmental absenteeism rate. Corporate policy requires an attendance rate of >96%. Currently, the department has 30% of its employees outside of the policy guidelines. Absenteeism causes a higher amount of stress for other employees by increasing workload, which contributes to a higher than desired variance level, decreases employee moral and engagement and it contributed to a declining retention rate.
