ASSESSMENT ITEM 1: WRITTEN TASK - MATHS IN YOUR WORLD ASSESSMENT ITEM 1: DESCRIPTION This task requires you to work individually and to submit/upload to LearnJCU. It is recommended that you use computer software like Word, PowerPoint or similar. You may also handwrite this task, but you must scan your work as a single PDF document for uploading to LearnJCU. Ensure it is legible and neat. There are two sections in this task; 0 Part A student to determine the example used. a Part B - choose a task from a given set of problems. Maths in Your World PART A Mathematics is used in many careers and in everyday life. Your task is to choose an example of when you have used mathematics in your life. It can be an example from your personal life or an experience at a job or other interest (sport, hobby, etc). Downloa Note: Please choose situation carefully. A basic use of simple Maths will not allow you- achieve a top mark. Keep the mathematics course specific. Details you need to include are: 1. A description of the situation/experience/scenario where maths was used. 2. Calculation specifics and working required to determine your result. This is the part where you do and show the maths. (Hint: Equation editor may be helpful). 3. A strategy to check the accuracy and reasonableness of your solution. 4. Well-presented information and mathematical working. It would be expected that your submission for Part A would be 3-5 pages long depending on your use of pictures and diagrams. Maths in Your World Part A Sample This sample task demonstrates a passing grade (P) response to Part A Higher grades are awarded to tasks that have a more complicated use of Mathematics from MA1022. These tasks also have clear and correct calculations, diagrams and procedures. The work is checked and well presented with dualityf language and layout. Making a concrete slab for a shed Source: bu nningsxomau 1. Situation: Making a concrete slab for a 3m x 3m shed. I wanted to build a shed in the back yard. The shed needs a concrete slab underneath to support and make the shed secured to the ground. It also raises the shed a little to reduce possible flooding. This task details the size (volume) of the slab and how much concrete was needed to make the slab. The cost of the materials to make the slab is also determined. Information about the concrete slab and materials needed was sourced from various online sites which are referenced in the task. 2. Calculations: Slab Volume Atypical shed slab is 200mm thick. ! also want to extend the concrete by 1m to the side for external storage so the final dimensions of the slab will be 3111 X 4m X 0.2m Note: Convert 200mm to in; (10mm = Inn and 100cm = 1m) 200mm + 10 = 20cm. 20cm -:- 100 = 0.2m The slab is a rectangular prism. The Volume of a prism is L x W x H. Volume of slab = 3 X 4 x 0.2 = 2.4m3 This means I needed 2.4m3 of concrete for the slab. Concrete Mix: Idecided to mix my own concrete. Using information from Cockburn Cement website, here is a guide table for the way to mix 1m3 of concrete. For my slab we need 2.4m3 so each amount needs to be multiplied by a factor of2.4. My order will be: Cement: 14 bags x 2.4 = 33.6 bags = 34 bags. Sand: 0.5 x 2.4 = 1.2m3. Aggregate: 1 x 2.4 = 2.4m3. Slab materials cost: Cost of materials from Townsville Mini Loads: Cement: 34 bags at $8.90; 34 x 8.9 = $302.60 Sand: $40.00 per tonne with 1.2 ton required per cubic metre; 1.2 x 1.2 x 40 = $57.60. Aggregate: $37.80 per tonne with 1.6 ton per cubic metre; 1.6 x 2.4 x 37.8 = $145.15 Total cost: 302.6 + 57.6 + 145.15 = $505.35 3. Accuracy Check: Volume Another formula for a Prism Volume is V = A, X h which is the Area of the Base x Height. So, for this slab the Area = 1 x w = 3 x 4 = 12m. The Volume = 12 x 0.2 = 2.4m'. This is the same as the previous result. Another Volume check can be done by changing all of the dimensions to millimeters instead of meters. Since 1m = 1000mm, 3m = 3000mm and 4m = 4000mm. Volume = 3000 x 4000 x 200 = 2 400 000 000mm3. Now, 1m = 1 000 000 000mm so to convert back to m3 2 400 000 000 + 1 000 000 000 = 2.4m3. Accuracy Check: Concrete ingredients The initial ratio for the Concrete is 1:2:4 based on the 1 meter cubed of concrete. For my slab this gave 34 bags cement, 1.2m' of sand and 2.4m of gravel.Dividing each of these values by 2.4 gives 14.17 cement bags, 0.5 m of sand and 1m3 of gravel which is a match for the concrete table. Accuracy Check: Cost of materials To check the cost, I use Excel to confirm my hand/calculator results. The table below shows that the initial costings are correct.
