Assessment Task 2: Project (STAR Chart) Consider a member of your household or a client, who uses a pattern of behaviour of any kind. For example, at home, you might think of a teenager that you live with, a spouse, a pet or even yourself. Watch the person or pet over a period of days and keep a record of the patterns of a behaviour that they use regularly or in a similar way, and that you do not like. Behaviours are actions, and do not have to be behaviours of concern for this task. For example, behaviours might be withdrawing, sulking, refusing to help around the house, yelling, complaining. They may also be a dog barking or scratching at the door, or a cat scratching on furniture, for example. Question 2.1 Complete the star chart after you have witnessed at least three episodes of the behaviour, and then answer the questions that follow. The first example has been done for you. Day/Date Time Setting (Where, who and what was happening at the time of the behaviour) Trigger (What Result (What Action happened next, happened What was the or what did the immediately before the incident) behaviour? person get from using the behaviour?) I was in bed and the cat had not yet Tues 7am been fed by my partner My alarm went off and I pressed the snooze button The cat started scratching at my face The behaviour stopped when I got out of bed who gets up first Question 2.2 What patterns did you see while using the STAR chart? For example, what triggers seemed to be setting off the behaviours, and what were the consequences of using the behaviour for the person or pet? Question 2.3 What do you think is motivating the person or pet to use the behaviour (Why do you think they consciously or subconsciously use the behaviour; what is the 'pay off'?) [ ] Question 2.4 What did you learn from using the STAR chart? [ ] Question 2.5 What could you suggest to help reduce the person or pet wanting to use this behaviour? [ ]
