The purpose of this assignment is for you to begin applying Six Sigma and the DMAIC approach to process improvement.
Due to an unacceptable performance level, your team has been tasked with improving a production process.
Fortunately, there are current video recordings of the production process, and you will be able to use these in your
improvement project. At the end of these instructions, you will find your teams:
Assigned product
Voice of the Business
Link to the process video
As you watch the video, make note of key process steps, including the potential indicators of the inputs, process
variables, and outputs of those steps as they relate to the improvement objectives. What might cause variability in the
process? Different operators, equipment, materials, environments, operating conditions, etc.?
The video will probably not have all the information that you need. You can conduct independent research and use your
judgment and experience to make reasonable assumptions about missing information. You can mark assumptions with
an * or other mark, and note they are assumptions.
After observing the production process and considering the voice of the business, decide on an improvement objective.
Submit a Define phase project report with the following deliverables:
A summary of the process, the improvement objective, and any other relevant information.
Translation of VOB to Key Business Issue to Critical-to-Business Requirement to Critical-to-Process variable (a
measurable process output indicator).
A high-level SIPOC diagram (yes, must be a SIPOC diagram, and not just a high-level process flow).
A project charter.
This is a technical engineering report. A professional deliverable is expected, for presentation as well as content. The
assignments should be as professional in appearance as if you were preparing reports at work or for publication. All
content (figures, tables, graphs, etc.) must be discussed.
Example: Do not simply copy & paste the SIPOC into your report. Discuss the purpose of the SIPOC, the results,
and how results will guide the project.
