ASSIGNMENT \#1: Producing a Dependency Graph and Determining the Critical Path For Assignment \#1 you will use MS Visio's PERT chart extension to (1) estimate task durations for 15 discrete tasks, (2) produce a dependency graph, and (3) populate a table that enables you to (a) identify all dependency paths and (b) determine the critical path. Step 1: Estimate task durations for 15 discrete tasks The following table shows the best-case, probable-case, and worst-case duration estimates (in persondays) for each of the 15 tasks that constitute the project. Draw from the associated formula (see Chapter 3 slide \#10) to calculate the final estimated duration for each task, and then enter that number in the fifth column ("Final Estimated Duration"). I recommend using MS Excel (or Google Sheets) in order to reduce the likelihood of human error. Please show two digits after the decimal point (e.g., 4.17). Step 2: Produce a dependency graph in MS Visio Using the PERT Chart extension in MS Visio (and the template I provide in the Assignment \#1 item in Canvas), produce a dependency graph that draws from the Predecessor Task(s) column in the table in Step 1. As shown in the task box provided in the template file, each task box should include only the task number and the final estimated duration. (I recommend copying and pasting this task box for the other 14 tasks, then editing the Task \# and the final estimated duration.) Step 3: Populate the critical path table Drawing from your dependency graph and your final estimated durations (for each task), populate the critical path table (below). Specifically, complete columns 2, 3, and 4 . As column 1 implies, your dependency graph should include 10 distinct paths. The solution for one of the paths (most likely the top path in your graph) is shown. Finally, highlight the row - with a red or blue font, or by highlighting the cells - that's associated with the critical path. Potential errors 1) Double-check your estimated durations (in the Step 1 table) to make sure that your calculations are correct. Step 1 errors will lead to errors in Step 2 and Step 3. 2) Double-check your dependency graph to make sure that your dependency connections are correct, per the values in the Predecessor Task(s) column in the Step 1 table. (Make sure you have 10 distinct paths.) Errors in your dependency graph will lead to errors in Step 3. 3) Double-check the values in the Path column in the Step 3 table. 4) Double-check the values in the Durations column in the Step 3 table. In past semesters, students have erred in transferring the correct numbers to this column. 5) Double-check your calculations in the Total No. of Person-Days column.
