A few years later, the county converted the pit to a landfill. The landfill accepted many kinds of trash that cause harm to the environment, including major appliances, animal carcasses, containers with hazardous content warnings, leaking car batteries, and waste oil. The Turtons complained to the county. The county didn't do anything. The Turtons filed a lawsuit against the county alleging violations of federal environmental laws pertaining to groundwater contamination and other pollution. Questions to answer: 1. Does a federal court have jurisdiction over this case? Why? 2. If they lose in the United States District Court, what can they do? 3. What jurisdiction does the United States District Court have? 4. Can they bring an appeal directly to the U.S. Supreme Court? 5. Say if the County asks if Turtons will agree to arbitration- what is arbitration? 6. Is the decision in arbitration always binding on parties?
