Overview

Assignment Background and Description

In order to complete this assignment successfully, we will need to create a business case for a project, along with a project charter. This includes doing the pre-project work, as well as the first step in the project life cycle, which is creating the project charter. The business case should include a need assessment, which starts by gathering data and comparing the current situation (current state) and the future direction (future state) of the company. A "need" is the gap between "what is" and "what should be". You will then create a project charter, along with an assumption log, which will be submitted to the project sponsor for review and approval.

High-Level Requirements

Pre-Project Work:

Business Case: we need to create a business case, which will list the objectives and reasons for project initiation. See section 1.2.6.1 of the PMBOK on page 30, to see the requirements for a business case. Use the bulleted section on page 31 as a framework for your business case. Tailor it to fit the needs of your case.

Project Benefits Management Plan: we will need to include a project benefits management plan in your business case. See section 1.2.6.2 of the PMBOK on page 33, to see the requirements for a project benefits management plan. Use the bulleted section on page 33 as a framework for your benefits management plan. Tailor it to fit the needs of your case.

Note: The Project Benefits Management Plan typically has a life beyond that of the project, as some benefits may not be realized until after the project is completed.

Project Charter: we will need to complete a project charter. See section 1.1 of the Book of Forms on page 2, to see the requirements for a project charter. This also includes descriptions of each section of the charter, and what information should be in each element.

Assumption Log: we will need to complete an assumption log. See section 1.2 of the Book of Forms on page 9, to see the requirements for an assumption log. This also includes descriptions of each section of the log, and what information should be in each element. For a more detailed description of how to create an assumption log, please watch the video "How to create an assumption log", which is posted on the Moodle page.

Overall Summary: an overall summary of the findings. Is PMI in alignment with industry expectations? Why or why not? In what areas are industry and PMI in alignment?

Deliverables

A single MS Word document containing a "Title Page", a "Table of Contents" generated by MS Word, your "Business Case", your completed "Project Charter" that provides details of your project proposal, and your "Assumption Log" that describes any assumptions you have made while creating the charter.

Your assignment needs to be submitted in MS Word format. Use the rubric posted on the Moodle page as a guide to ensure your assignment has all the required components
